Last Sunday, the 7th Prospect Portrait Prize opened and the gallery filled very quickly with people for the presentation. We traveled to Sydney last Saturday and had accommodation graciously supplied to us by the Sisters of St Joseph at Mary MacKillop Place, North Sydney. Early start tomorrow, leaving home at 4.30am to catch the 6.05am flight to Sydney. The foundry will be installing the new bronze sculpture of Mary MacKillop about 10.30 am.The grounds should be ready with new area in sandstone for the installation. Ang's Slipware workshop is this weekend. I have had a relaxing time out whilst I finished my painting. Now that I have finished I need to get back to the bust of Mary MacKillop and finish modelling it so it can have molds made of it. I spent a few hours out at the Tea Tree Gully Craft Workshop club today whilst the girls were firing the big gas kiln for the second time since it has been rebuilt. . I have had a couple of heads sitting waiting for some attention . I modelled them  after reading how Tom Bartel makes hollow sculptures by coiling the head instead of working and modelling a solid head and later hollowing the head at the  leather hard stage. I came back from Melbourne and caught a nasty cold which lasted a week and suceeded in giving it to the rest of my family. Work has slowed down these last couple of weeks. Dismantling the sculpture I began to dismantle the sculpture the day after the foundry left and began to pull off the clay in lumps and wet it down whilst it lay in some big containers.  Kathleen Evans was a special visitor to my studio along with Sisters of Saint Joseph from Adelaide.  The arm has been moved aside whilst the front section was removed. Collateral damage to the clay is inevitable.  The crucifix stayed with the moul, as did the rosary.  The top half of the sculpture's mould. I will be going to the Cannonisation Ceremony at the cathedral in Adelaide, Sunday afternoon, where they will be unveiling the new plaque for Mary's Sainthood just before the Rome Ceremony. Went into Adelaide for the annual 12 km Fun Run to the bay this morning. This is the second cast taken , the first from the silicone rubber mould before anything has been done to it. The edges will need to be surformed to remove the excess plaster and the line where the two halfs of the mould meet or the seam line will need to be removed with great care.There is a cavity in the plaster by the hip which will need filling and also the extra plaster by the waist, neck

Just an update on things here. The new floor to the studio was finished on Tuesday and it looks good. I really felt for the 4 men cementing as the temperature has been HOT . There were three Italians over 60 and a young labourer to help them. Mary MacKillop has now been installed on the stone plinth yesterday and has been polished and covered in readiness for Sunday's Opening. Stephen demonstrated underglaze painting on several teapots and fired the Oranges one to show the final product. He painted it Saturday afternoon, bisqued the underglaze overnight and then quickly fired the glazed teapot and had it to show us Sunday afternoon. Amazingly fast firings with no ill effects. I finally received a letter from the council saying my EOI was unsuccessful in reaching the next stage, so I am a little disappointed but they were happy to give a general review and it was not the lack of quality of the EOI, just that they had not particularly thought of a figurative sculpture in bronze as a public sculpture for that area. I would like to invite all friends and collegues to the unveiling of Mary MacKillop's statue.It will be transported from Fundere Fine Art Foundry in West Footscray in early March and positioned in place the week of the unveiling. Surrounding hills nearing Albury. This is what Northern Victoria was like last Wednesday when we travelled from Adelaide to Albury, NSW . We travelled for hundreds of kilometres with smoke haze like this.
